Photo by @robertclarkphoto // Why do snakes stick out their tongues? When a snake sticks its forked tongue out, it is not meant as an act of mockery or aggression. A snake’s tongue is a pretty cool tool that helps it know where it is going and what is lurking around it. Snakes are not able to see with their eyes as well as humans can, so they must rely on their other senses. All snakes have a special organ that humans do not have; it is called the Jacobson Organ. This special organ is found on the root of the snake’s mouth, and its sole function is to keep the snake aware of its environment. Check out the @NYTMag for an article I shot a few pictures for.

Photo by @RezaPhotography // A question of "belonging" Xinjiang, China (Eastern Turkestan). A Han worker at the oil refinery of Karamay. In this region, government policy encouraged Chinese Han workers to migrate to work at “sensitive” sites, to the detriment of local peoples. These policies are part of a policy to slowly but steadily colonize these regions which had been the home of the Uighur, Tajik, and Kazakh peoples from time immemorial. Photo by @FransLanting We are pleased to announce that “Frans Lanting: The Evolution of LIFE” film will shown as a part of the 2017 @Mountainfilm Festival, at the historic Sheridan Opera House in Telluride, CO on Saturday, May 27th at 9:15 AM and again on Sunday, May 28th at 3:45 PM. For more info visit: https://tinyurl.com/mpcv3yy and https://tinyurl.com/lw82rqb There are places on Earth that can take you back to a time before there was life. I went to Yellowstone’s hot springs, and at twilight I positioned myself to capture the Moon rising above a landscape of steaming mineral terraces. In the days of early Earth more than four billion years ago, the Moon was closer than it is today. Using a telephoto lens had the optical effect of making the Moon appear larger relative to the rest of the scene. Photo by Kevin Schafer – @schaferpho @natgeo – Dawn on Midway Atoll, Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument. Besides being an important historical site, Midway is home to the largest nesting colony in the world for Laysan Albatross: nearly half a million breeding pairs. Having landed on the beach after a night at sea, these birds begin their march back to their nest sites and waiting partners. Papahanaumokuakea was designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 2010 because of both its natural and cultural value, yet it is among several Marine National Monuments under review by the Trump Administration to assess whether they should remain in their current form and size. I will share images all this week to encourage readers to weigh in on this process. Photo by @joepetersburger // LAVENDER DIARIES // Common #blue #butterflies (Polyommatus icarus) #mating on a #lavender flower. I planted the lavenders in front of the house, which attract thousands of different pollinators. So I had to take only 15 steps from our front door to have this shot. It was really windy that afternoon, which makes it very difficult to focus. Moreover, one of my daughters really wanted to touch them so finally it was not so easy... No need to travel far away for fantastic experience. Travel less, discover your backyard, reduce your ecological footprint! Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Puffin in thrift – LAST TWO PLACES! This is a shout out to anyone who might be interested in travelling with me to photograph puffins and numerous other bird species this coming July 8th-15th. With just two places left on my Shetland Photo tour this will be the last chance for a few years to travel with me to this remote archipelago as I won’t be running this trip next year due to other commitments. Shetland is a place that I know uniquely well having spent multiple summers there working #onassignment for @natgeo as I completed my story for them on the Northern gannet. For more information please email me at tours@andrewparkinson.com and come and see sights like this beautiful puffin for yourself. I’ll be your guide for the whole week as we explore many of Shetland’s most remote islands and spectacular coastal seabird colonies. This image was taken there a few years ago and whilst it’s a relatively straightforward image of this iconic bird it is enhanced by the rich and varied colour palette of pink coastal thrift, yellow lichen coloured rocks and the deep blue of the distant ocean. It was at this time of year when I was packing up the last few bits of my camping and abseiling equipment, my camera equipment 3 miles away in my car, that I looked down toward the base of cliffs and saw a large pod of killer whales. With no camera equipment to hand my only option was simply to sit and watch, one of the most spectacular highlights of my time there as the pod contained a full family group of large males, females and calves. To sit on a remote cliff top in the UK and to witness such a wildlife spectacle, here in the UK, is a fitting reminder to why these islands will always be one of my favourite wildlife destinations. Photo by Stephanie Sinclair @stephsinclairpix // An elephant disembarks a Ringling Bros. train in Washington, D.C., in 2015. Elephants have since been retired from the circus. This evening the curtain will fall for the last time on the self-dubbed “Greatest Show on Earth,” America’s biggest and longest-running traveling circus. After 146 years, the Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus will pump its caravan brakes permanently. Other traveling circuses may not be far behind. Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have joined forces on a bill that would ban the use of exotic and wild animals in traveling circuses and any other entertainment act on wheels. In late March, Representatives Raul Grijalva, an Arizona Democrat, Ryan Costello, a Pennsylvania Republican, and 22 other lawmakers introduced the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Protection Act (TEAPSPA) in the House. It would require the 19 traveling circuses in the U.S. with performing animals to to use only human entertainers—or shut down. If the bill passes, it will end life on the road for more than 200 big cats, bears, camels, and elephants still working as circus performers. Thirty-four other countries have instituted similar bans, as have dozens of cities and counties in the U.S., including Los Angeles and San Francisco. #elephants #circus #train

Photo by @FransLanting Toucans add a striking presence to any forest where they occur. Their outrageous bills are complemented by outlandish facial patterns, such as the eye rings of blue skin in this toco toucan, which I photographed in bird park in Brazil’s Pantanal, the world’s largest tropical wetland. I turned the amazing textures and patterns of the toucan’s face into an abstraction of pure color. @natgeo @natgeocreative @natgeotravel #Brazil #Pantanal #Toucan #Olympics #Rio

Photo by @robertclarkphoto // Take a look online or in the hard copy of the @NYTmag for some picture that I made of some #BurmesePythons. The writer #DanielEnger describes pythons as, "a slithering digestive tract" they wait, attack, then eat it's prey ( head first), that meal can hold up to 50,000 calories. That amount of caloric intake could kill or harm other species but the python has adapted to the overload. This information might be good for humans. From the article, ....In his lab, Amit Choudhary wondered if there might be something in a python’s yogurt blood that helps it undergo this protective transformation. He dabbed a few drops on a rodent’s pancreatic cells to see how they would respond. “The results were mind-blowing,” he recalled on a recent April afternoon in Boston, where he now does research at Harvard and M.I.T.’s Broad Institute. The article is fascinating and delves into an area of #EvolutionaryBiology that I love to read about. Thank you for the work @amykellner & @kathyryan1

Photo by @jeff_gusky// Carved by a 23 year old American soldier from South Boston, Massachusetts named Archie Sweetman, this iconic profile now exists in total darkness beneath a French farmfield. Sweetman was wounded but survived the war. He would go on to become a noted Boston commercial artist in the 1950’s and 60’s and had a house on Cape Cod. In 1993 at age 98, Sweetman would graduate from the Massachusetts College of Art in Boston. The underground cities of WWI are a time capsule of emotional stories about young men who are all no longer with us.This photograph is part of an 18 month exhibition of my photographs of The Hidden World of World War I at The Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington, DC http://tiny.cc/2vw6jy. #history #hiddenwwi #wwi #hidden #smithsonian #Europe #France

Photograph by @andyparkinsonphoto/@thephotosociety Mute swan shaking – Every single species that I work with always has their own distinct qualities, something about them that sets them apart and making them truly unique. This might be the habitat in which they live, the behaviours that they display or sometimes, as with the swans, it can be the simple beauty of their elegant form. There are few things in nature to me as beautiful as the arched sweep of a swans neck, especially when it’s bathed in late evening sunlight. In this image it is the swans own body that is acting as a natural reflector, bouncing light back up underneath its chin and creating a radiant glow whilst the droplets of water themselves are backlit against a distant shadowed forest. In a moment like this I will always fire a burst of images, usually about 4-6 and then it is simply a case of selecting the one where the swan is in the most favourable position. Though I’ve seen this behaviour on countless occasions there is only a narrow window on the lake where this quality of light is combined with the dark backdrop and so, as it so often is with photography it is a case of working day in day out, waiting for the moment when both critically important aspects serendipitously collide. This image also only works when the swan is facing slightly away, otherwise the reflected light under its chin is not visible and this tiny detail is one of those critically important to the final image. As always in these high contrast situations I’ve preselected my preferred aperture and then set my exposure manually to ensure that I retain detail in all of the critical whites whilst allowing a few peripheral whites to burn out. If I’d tried to retain detail in all then the image would be significantly darker and in my opinion, less effective.
