On the Road to Dasht e Qala, #Afghanistan We were in the midst of shooting a documentary for National Geographic on my relationship as a reporter with Afghanistan, and, more specifically, with Massoud, the iconic head of the Afghan resistance. She was walking along the uneven road strewn with stones, a lively blue figure whose face was hidden behind a burqa. She walked, holding her child close, a heavy but precious and warm bundle, her body upright despite her fatigue, moving forward, against all odds. There are many such courageous souls throughout the world, in countries where infrastructure is minimal, moving along the roads, from one village to the other, from one dispensary to the next. World Book and Copyright Day Kurdistan Regional Government, Iraq, #Sakran Since 2013, I have been working on a book and exhibition project on the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq. I wanted to highlight its culture, its country and its people that, in the midst of troubled times, seek to bring peace to the Middle East. Here, in this house of the village of Sakran in Iraqi Kurdistan, a discreet veil preserves the books of time. Completely destroyed in 1977 by order of Saddam Hussein, Sakran lives again since its reconstruction in 1991. At the beginning of my teenage years I was a serious student and I had just left the town where I was born; Tabriz to go live with my relatives in Tehran. There was a reason that drove me towards becoming inventive. I had to quench my insatiable thirst for reading, which my father’s modest salary was unable to afford. I had discovered an abandoned room on the mezzanine floor of the college, and I had the idea that it could recapture its heart and soul in the form of a library. I shared my plan with my father, who encouraged me, saying his only wish was that I should take complete responsibility for it myself. After launching an appeal for gifts of books and magazines to all the parents of the educational institutions in the area, after devoting my holidays to labelling and classifying the 630 books we had collected, and after cleaning the room and putting up shelves, the great day arrived—the inauguration in front of an audience of parents, teachers and principals, along with some students. The following summer, and every afternoon when classes were over, the library became my home port, being me in charge of loans. I would sail away reality every time I read something. It was my sanctuary. #KurdistanRenaissance #kurdish #bookstragram #book #bookday #worldbookday #iraqikurdistan #kurd #kurdistan #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety Kurdistan (Iraq)

A Cultural Dilemma: To Eat or Not to Eat Cheese #Xinjiang #Uyghur Autonomous Region, #China While on assignment for National Geographic in the province of Xinjiang, I had the privilege of meeting and getting to know several #Turkic tribes who had settled in the region even before it was China. On the heights of the #Altai Mountains, a #Kazakh woman makes cheese out of cow milk. As a rule the #Chinese Han people do not eat dairy products. It is a particularity shared by other Turkic tribes. Escape #Pakistan. The mountains had quaked violently. Each jolt left another village buried beneath the rubble, destroyed more homes, and left more deaths in its wake. The innumerable survivors wandered about in a daze, broken by those instants when the calm of their everyday lives was shattered. To the north of the country, those who were able had found refuge in the camps whose perimeter was surrounded by barbed wire. They had been living there for a year. I came upon these two very young children, who seemed to want to stage a breakout, conscious of the potential danger of the barbed wire. Easter #Dohuk, #IraqiKurdistan On this Easter day, at the #Church of St Ith Llaha, this young girl had the face of an angel or a very young madonna, and radiated a pale, almost divine light, accentuated by her ochre scarf. Her ageless gaze was filled with the peaceful silence of an internal dialogue – a true spirituality, a far cry from dogmas and rituals. The most significant celebration of the Christian religion, Easter commemorates the resurrection of Jesus Christ and is celebrated throughout the world. The Christians of Kurdistan have not yet renounced their faith, despite the unremitting war that continues to rage throughout their devastated country. #easter #religion #celebration #spirituality #littlegirl #portrait #portraitphotography #face #christian #christianity #kurdish #angel #KurdistanRenaissance #kurd #kurdistan #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety Duhok, Iraq

#Algeria While on assignment for a book on Algeria for several months, I reached the #valley of #Assakrem, in the midst of a volcanic plateau, near the refuge of Father Foucault. I spent hours, early in the morning and also at down, when the stars seems to dialogue with the dying light; trying to catch the beauty of this stunning land. Tamil New Year #Hindu #Temple of Narassingua Perournal, Saint-Pierre la Ravine Blanche, Reunion Island The Tamil Hindu community of Reunion Island comes together each year to celebrate the festivities of the new year. The community lives in harmony with the diverse groups that make up the society of Reunion Island. For the most part, the communities are open to both groups of other religious persuasions as well as atheists and such occasions bring together people from every corner of the island who participate in the discovery of another culture over several days. Prayers and ceremonies dedicated to the divinities, ritual baths, offerings of thanks, traditional vegetarian meals, performances and dances mark this event, which is celebrated throughout the world. Happy new year to the Tamils of Reunion and Hindus everywhere: may the solidarity of the Reunion communities spread throughout the world. #tamil #newyear #celebration #spirituality #reunionisland #livetogether #tolerance #hope #iledelareunion #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan ##عكاس #رضادقتى @thephotosociety @reuniontourisme Ravine Blanche

#Azerbaidjan, #Quba, #Gyrmyzy #Gasaba (« Red Village ») In these days of the celebration of Passover (Jewish Passover) commemorating the Exodus from Egypt and the emancipation of the Hebrews, I remembered this privileged moment shared between representatives of the Muslim and Jewish communities in Azerbaijan on the occasion of the Easter. The Jewish people celebrate Passover to commemorate the liberation of Jews from slavery under the Pharaohs in ancient Egypt. The Red Village is considered the world’s only all-Jewish town outside of Israel and holds the greatest compact population of Jews out of all post-Soviet countries. #pessah #passover #jewish #muslim #share #easter #religion #tolerance #aztagram #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety Azerbaijan

Silk Stories Over the course of my reportage, I often wander through the bazaars, the nerve center of the societies I visit. They reveal the particularities of each people. In #Xinjiang (Chinese) #eastern Turkestan), I visited the covered markets, with their sunbeams broken up by a tangle of branches and vines. There one can still find a world that brings to mind the ancient and legendary Silk Road. Photography taken while on a reportage on Xinjiang for National Geographic Magazine. Beneath the Tents I was fortunate to have been able to discover the arid region of #Balochistan in #Pakistan while working on assignment for National Geographic. In this region, the entire population has been abandoned by the those in power. The money from the pipeline that wends its way past their miserable habitations goes right into the pockets of the “Lords of the Punjab,” thus dubbed by the venerable #Baloch chief, Akbar Bugti. #Bugti was a former minister and member of Parliament who was assassinated when he tried to fight for #Balochi rights. In this region, the poorest of the poor are undoubtedly the nomadic tribes, like these young women, who constantly wander the barren mountain region. Text written by Rachel Deghati. International Day of Reflection on the 1994 Genocide in Rwanda #Burundi From the spot where we found ourselves on that day, the other bank seemed like paradise. The sunset over the luxurious vegetation inspired a sense of contemplative serenity. Boats gently glided towards us along the lake, leaving Rwanda behind. But, as the men and women jumped out of their makeshift craft, we could see their terrified faces etched with exhaustion that were telling a very different story: hell lay on the other side of the river. Amid the eloquent silence of the media, the massacres between the Hutus and the Tutsis had begun. We were four photographers sent by Reporters Without Borders to raise public awareness about the massacre which was taking place amidst deafening indifference. The battlefield was the border lake of Cyhoha, swarming with those on both sides who were fleeing certain death. A man descended from a listing wooden boat. He seemed to be clutching some material in his hands. As I approached, I realized that he had bundled a tiny baby who had just been born in the midst of this hell. #Ethiopia Capturing the light that illuminates a face, pausing to seize a look, an expression of any kind: solemn, sweet, tender, hard, violent. Taking the necessary amount of time while all the while remaining light-hearted with the person with whom one has begun this silent “dialogue” to which the camera bears witness… These are some of the elements I set out to teach to a group of youths in Ethiopia. Indeed, we made up a rather motley crew: six youths from six different continents, twenty-four young Ethiopians – some orphans, some from disadvantaged backgrounds – and assistants from UNICEF. The first group were the winners of an international photography contest launched by UNICEF and Sony and coordinated by the World Photography Association. The theme was the Rights of Children, and I was leading it, along with David Beckham. The winners won the chance to participate in one of my workshops, conducted in Ethiopia, along with twenty-four young Ethiopians who had been presented with cameras.
Our happy group set off, trying to share moments that would build bridges between cultures, social classes and destinies. All of them shared this apprenticeship in photography and their view of the world around them. International Mine Awareness Day #Cambodia Prosthesis for the victims of antipersonnel mines, lined up in a workshop managed by local NGOs under the aegis of UNICEF. It was in 1996, in Cambodia. Today, antipersonnel mines are still wreaking devastation and are all the more difficult to locate that they move during the rainy season.. Many adults and children fall victim to this “weapon of cowards.” Most of the time, children are killed instantly since their small bodies cannot support the intensity of the blast. As for adults, they often lose one leg, or both. Over the course of my reportage, I met with victims and heads of various associations. The scope of this tragedy, which is not limited to Cambodia, is symbolized by this image of the foot prosthesis. Resignation #Afghanistan She was living in the suburbs of #Kabul, at the #Ghanbar Camp, whose name, rather too aptly, means “crossroads.” She was there with her family, like so many other displaced persons who had fled from the southern region of the country after the coalition bombings and deadly encounters with Taliban insurgents. A deeply resigned lassitude filled her face, with its lost and sorrowful gaze, and permeated every one of her gestures.
