-VANISHING AMERICANA- Back in 1981 I had a chance to work on a newspaper in Evansville, Indiana and it has to be one of my favorite times in photojournalism. I worked a late afternoon shift and usually photographed night sporting events and feature stories. I drove through farms and corn fields and documented some great people living throughout Illinois and Kentucky as well. I would wake the following day and see my pictures displayed on the front page of a newstand or spread out on breakfast counters as people sipped their morning coffee. Back then pictures ran huge on beatifully large broadshheets. Classic Americana. Sadly much of that is disappearing. Here a carhop sweeps a parking lot in one of Indiana's last drive-in's to permanently close. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #americana #drivein #carhop #indiana #midwest #diner #evansville

-RV MADNESS- One the coolest road trips I experienced was in 2011 when my wife Corinna and I rented a van, shoved an inflatable matress in the back, and hit the road driving from Las Vegas, Nevada to Los Angeles then up the western coast of California to Canada and then back down through Idaho, Wyoming, Texas and back to Vegas. All together about 16 States in three weeks. It was just after I got married and since Corinna was German, I thought I would show off America to her. Well somewhere in Colorado I found this modern day wilderness encampent of crowded RV's which struck me as a sharp contrast between nature and humanity. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #rv #motorhome #colorado #roadtrip #americana #usa #massofhumanity
-PAKISTAN 1988- This is another image from a story I did on Afghan refugees living along the Pakistan border. These curious twins watched me in front of their mud home as I drove by in a taxi at the Nasir Bagh refugee camp just outside the town of Peshawar, Pakistan. It was taken with a Nikon F3 camera with attached 18mm f3.5 lens with Fuji 800 film. The only time I could get any good lighting was in early morning or fading afternoon light. The sun cast impossibly horrible shadows on things. My routine was to shoot in the morning then give the film to the taxi driver to get processed. Then I would take a long nap and edit the film around lunch time. Then go back out shooting after sunset. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #twins #afghanrefugees #afghans #pakistan #refugee #afghanistan #children

-MONKEY BUSINESS-Billionaire Malcolm Forbes and screen legend Elizabeth Taylor were floating around Asia together on a private yacht and during the 1989 stop in Bangkok, Thailand, Liz decided to hold a press conference about saving wild animals in the region. The local photographers were going crazy and I had to fight my way through the sea of photographers. Though I had the normal clear shots, I chose this crop to give the viewer a sense of drama in the crazy paparazzi 'gang bang' world that happens at these events. It has allot of action and action is good. It also raises many questions as to what is going on. Mystery is good. Before any of the press arrived, I sneaked down into Forbes's boat. As I look around, a painting on the wall caught my attention. Suddenly a firm hand patted my shoulder and it was the man himself. Forbes said "You have good taste young man--that's a Chagall". After recovering from the embarrassing moment I asked him a question. "Mr. Forbes, what investing advice would you have for a guy like me"? He replied "Son, my advice to you is to save $5000 and invest it in the stock market". He was so right. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #elizabethtaylor #malcolmforbes #liztaylor #screenlegends #bangkok #moviestars #forbes500

-KABUL COUP- Back in 1990 when I was based in Bangkok, Thailand I received a telex requesting I go to Afghanistan and photograph the attempted coup in Kabul. There was no time to read up...I just had to go. I would catch up on the story through the newspapers at the airport gift shop. Looking at this image of Afghan soldiers inside the shelled Defence Minister residence may look easy but believe me it wasn't. Just getting all my transmitting gear out of the barbed wire Kabul Airport was a feat. I was kicked out of the Defence Minister residence right after I took this picture. Occasionally a rocket fired from the rebels would explode in some part of the city. Scary stuff. But not as scary as that 15-year old government soldier resting his chin on the muzzle of an A K-47. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #kabul #afghanistan #ak47 #war #soldiers #asia #gun
The last course of the river #Egypt, South of #Alexandria I was on assignment for National Geographic on Nile Delta. Isn't the Nile considered the cradle of civilization and agriculture? The Nile, abounding in organic plants, came from African lands to feed Egypt, to the beat of its floods. As years and centuries went by, irrigated and cultivated lands gave back to man the lavish fruit of his labor. Many species of fish used to live in the waters of the generous river. At that time, men, animals and nature lived in balance. Then came the day when man, proud of his technological knowledge and following the inevitable momentum of progress, wanted to tame nature and the Nile in order to better control its stream, its floods and its recedings. Temples, sleeping Pharaohs and their treasures were cut up and moved a few hundred feet away to prevent them from being forever immersed. A giant piece of concrete was erected to trap the waters of the river: it was named the Aswan Dam. That huge wall may provide electric power, however it blocks the natural fertilizers needed for cultures. As a result, the soil has grown poorer and fish have become scarcer. As man wanted to provide a technological answer to that natural disaster, the Nile was encircled by petrochemical plants producing fertilizers here and there. Nevertheless, those fertilizers poisoned the river as they fed the earth. On the banks of the Nile, in the delta, fish lay dead, and the hands of fishermen are affected by skin disease. Further away, the river, exhausted by its hindered course and polluted by factory wastes, flows into the sea. Text written by Rachel Deghati. -HISTORIC FLIGHT-- This year marks the 20th anniversary that Texas businesswoman and aviator Linda Finch made her round-the-world flight to celebrate Amelia Earhart's attempt to circumnavigate the globe 80-years ago. This picture was taken in 1997 during her stop at Honolulu International Airport. My competition from the other newspaper was on ground level doing the standard waving shots but I wanted a different angle so I climbed up near the top of the hanger to get a birds-eye view. The parked replica of Earhart's 1935 Lockheed Electra 10E aircraft along with the hula dancers entertaining Finch gave a striking resemblance to an old vintage photograph of a Bob Hope World War II USO tour. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #lindafinch #ameliaearhart #vintageaircraft #lockheed #lockheedelectra #honolulu #aircraft
The never-ending dept #Cambodia. #Thai #border, #Poipet There were about one hundred children coming from all over the country. They were orphans or children abandoned because of the high destitution they were living in. Every day, despite the risk of getting caught by the Thai frontier officers, they would enter Thailand in order to sift through the rubbish bins which were more abundant in Thailand than in Cambodia. Back in Cambodia, they would go to the scrap merchant – the one who rent to them pieces of cardboard at full price so that they would spend the night in relative security. The rubbishes would be weighed. And each time, the children would hope that this time, they would be able to discharge their debt and finally be freed. But it was never enough. At night, lonely and full of anxiety, the scrap merchant’s young slaves would fall asleep on the pieces of cardboard, increasing their never-ending debt. Text by Rachel Deghati. -DIFFERING VIEWS- This might qualify as a 'Decisive Moment'. In 1985 I was on assignment for my newspaper when I came accross a heated argument over Fidel Castro in Miami's Little Havana district. In a perfect choreography a man removes a pair of glasses at the exact moment his Cuban friend lands a left jab to the unsuspecting target. I still can't figure out if that bright light in the background is a lamp post or my flash refecting off something but whatever it is, it helped add a touch of drama to the scene. -LAYOVER- Normally I would never press my face against an airport window with a Nikon SLR but when you carry a Leica rangefinder camera with a roll of black and white Tri-X film, something just takes over. This picture of a lonely passenger at a rainy Taoyuan International Airport in Taiwan was made out of sheer boredom while I waited for a connecting flight to Bangkok. I used a Leica M7 with the wonderful 28mm f2.0 Summicron lens. CATTLE BOY- This picture was taken in Bagan, Burma in 1992 and is one of my favorite places in Asia. Allot has changed in all those years and it will be interesting to see how much when my wife Corinna and I visit there in October. The area has about 2000 temples over 50 square miles along the Irrawaddy River and I recall going up one massive Pagoda tunnel barefoot in the dark to get to the top. Then I stepped on something big, crunchy and squishy (probably a massive Beetle). My foot slipped in the goo and I shot out of the top of the 200 ft structure screaming as a brilliant red setting sun refected off the surrounding red brick temples. I ran accross the street with my Leica M7 and approached him while snapping away saying "Great hat man". It was the only way to get the picture. The worse that could happen is he punched me or buy a drink. Fortunately he was a former photographer on a Scottish daily so he understood what I was going go for. The dunes of the immense desert of #Taklamakan stretch as far as the eye can see. It is an ancient part of the Silk Road, with ancient cities now lost or fallen into decrepitude, encroached upon by the shifting sands, recalling fallen kingdoms. One can still make out the outline of broken walls of ancient habitations, and fields are bordered by a few pieces of wood propped up towards the sky. -ANGOLA- In a remote village outside the town of Kuhito, Angola a curious child peers through a church window while I photographed the delivery of donated shoes by an American NGO in 2013. The African nation has one of the most media restrictive governments in the world and only because of my humanitarian visa was I able to enter the country. There will be new elections in August so it will be interesting to see what happens. Though Angola is oil and diamond rich, the vast majority of the population live in extreme poverty. On the eleventh exhausting day of travelling dusty roads and avoiding the Civil War's mine fields buried in the bush country, I was struck by a serious mystery illness and had to end the trip early which was a shame beacause the people were great and the country has a stark beauty. The nearest functioning hospital was almost 150 miles away so I was pretty much on my own. If not for my wife Corinna (Who I bring with me everywhere) I might not have made it back to Germany. -PAKISTAN- This picture of Afghan refugees waiting to see a doctor at a camp in Peshawar, Pakistan was part of a story I did in 1988. Fantastic place but now it is probably a bit dicey. One thing I learned while working in Asia is to hire a great taxi driver who speaks english. They can be your translator, body guard, ambulance and keep the kids from posing in front of the camera. Always sit with your driver and buy them lunch. If you treat them with respect, they will look after you. Back in those days I carried a set of Motorola walkie talkies and gave one to the driver. If you travel in remote areas of Asia I would recommend carrying a set and make sure you have at least a two mile radius. It can save your life. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #peshawar #afghans #pakistan #refugees #afghanrefugees #afghanistan
International Day of Families #Iraq, Kurdistan Regional Government, between #Duhok and# Zakho, Refugee camp of Cham mishko. Since 2013, I have been working on a book and exhibition project on the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq. I wanted to highlight its culture, its country and its people that, in the midst of troubled times, seek to bring peace to the Middle East. Here, at the refugee camp of Cham Mishko, entire families are assembled on the long road to rebuilding themselves. Many families have been torn apart by the war ravaging Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria and Iraq. Off to fight on the one hand or forced onto the road to exile on the other, parents and children leave their family homes with no hope of returning. Refugee children of the same family, belonging to the Qirani Hajj Mirza tribe. The Cham mishko refugee camp received many Yazidis who fled the town of Shingal (Sinjar in Arabic), which was seized by ISIS on August 3rd 2014, before being retaken on November 13th 2015 by Kurdish forces, supported by an international coalition. The Yazidis of Kurdish ethnic origin are a religious community who practice Yazidism, one of the oldest monotheistic religion in the world with similarities in somes ritual with Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Judaism as well as Mazdaism. They live mainly in the province of Nineveh in the north of Iraqi Kurdistan. Since 2014, they have been persecuted by the Islamic State, who regard them as devil worshippers. #InternationalDayofFamilies #family #familyfirst #familyphotography #refugeecamp #refugee #KurdistanRenaissance #kurd #kurdistan #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety
-LOCKED UP- Back in 1998 the Halawa Prison in Honolulu, Hawaii had a serious overcrowding issue and the Warden wanted to get media coverage to help expose the problem. So after getting model releases from all the inmates I was locked inside for two hours and roamed freely through the cells. Everyone was pretty cool and fortunately I didn't manage to irritate anyone. Though some photographers get hung up on sharpness (and this image clearly shows motion in the low light) I personally feel it is more important to generate an emotional connection with the viewer which I think this scary moment accomplishes. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #prisonlife #honolulu #hawaii #inmates #prison

Mother's Day #Colombia, Cauca Department, #Inza, Tierras Blancas farm Guardian of the sanctuary There is a wooden house perched on top of a hill. In the distance, small spots of bright colors animate the loggia along the façade. The sound of laughter is apparent, creating a light and pleasant atmosphere. The surrounding view is peaceful, the infrastructure remarkably well maintained, and the house is rather basic, but a sense of softness and tenderness is present during the encounter with these women of all ages. United in solidarity around the cultivation of coffee, they are all active members of the “Buscando Futuro” association. Sweetness, clarity, and determination are visible throughout the dozens of different faces of these women. Some of them are not married, while others have seen their brothers or fathers killed and taken away from them. All of the women are living in cohesion, attached to their plantation; their only means of survival. In a room of the house, the headquarters of the association, a young woman is cradling her child. -NEW ZEALAND- One tends to see the world in a completely different way with a Leica rangefinder camera and Kodak Tri-X bw film compared to a color digital Nikon or Canon SLR. I noticed my photojournalism changed for the better. This still life image of escaping leaves was taken in 2004 on a tiny island off the coast of Auckland, New Zealand with a Leica M7 and chrome 24mm f 2.8 Elmarit lens. Though I have contemplated purchasing a new digital M10 for color, I am thinking more towards an older M3 body and shooting Kodak color negative film then using a Hasselblad scanner for the analog look. I still use digital cameras for jobs but as you can see from my postings, my work is all over the map which drives curators crazy. I just love all aspects of photography and hate being pinned down with a certain 'style'. -NOSTALGIC MIAMI BEACH- A group of seniors lounge on South Beach in 1984. This recent archive find which was taken with a Nikon FE camera brings back memories when Miami Beach was a virtual ghost town in the early 1980's. That's the Revere Hotel in the background which was built in 1950. It was later destroyed by Italian fashion designer Gianni Versace. I worked as a staff photographer with the Miami News from 1984 to 1986 and lived in a highrise apartment accross the street from the News building. Occasionally I would get in the elevator and actor Chuck Norris would be inside. He lived in my same building. A little guy who was very quiet. One night past midnight while on my way home, a white Ferrari scarred the hell out of me as it raced by. Found out it was Miami Vice filming an episode. I used to run into Don Johnson all the time. Ah...the good old days. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #miami #miamibeach #southbeach #florida #seniors #nostalgic #artdeco
Bubbles of Modernity #Azerbaijan, #Baku, Old City, Flower Festival In the background is the "Maiden Tower" or "Qiz Qalasi", the landmark and part of UNESCO world heritage. A youth flashmob gathered with bubbles during the Flower Festival. When I saw this girl, I immediately thought of the name the tower in background "The Maiden Tower". Text written by Rachel Deghati. -COOL HOUSE- One of the neat things about living in Germany is that there are so many parks and forests with lakes and walking trails. You could spend years exploring and still not see everything. Corinna and I drove about 60 miles out of Hamburg last fall and walked about 10 miles through dense forest around three lakes. Sometimes we ended up in farmland with nothing around for miles and then find ourselves in a small town with a bakery and stop for a coffee and cake. In one of the areas we visited near a lake we walked past this cool house. Typical German perfection and the bicycle is a nice touch. William Eggleston would be proud...even if it's not a tricycle. #travelingourplanet #travelingourplanet #lonelyplanet #life #dailylife #lensculture #ig_global_people #lensculturestreets #photographyislife #photojournalist #pictureoftheday #35mmphotography #leica #leicaambassador #travelphoto #filmphotographic #capture #photoart #streetlife #picoftheday #imageoftheday #decisivemoment #jeffwidener #germany #architecture # home #europe #tricycle #modernarchitecture #german

#Azerbaijan, #Baku, Holy Myrrhbearers Cathedral In Azerbaijan, while working on a long term assignment on the Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities who live peacefully together. This story sheds light on the incredible assimilation of diverse religious groups all driven by the desire to share in a mutual respect that is not present in other countries. A woman from the Orthodox Christian community lights candles at the Easter Vigil. The Orthodox Church holds an Easter Vigil at sundown where a Paschal candle is illuminated by a sacred flame. The candle is passed around so that all the participants can light the candles they are holding. The growing light symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the world. This Russian Orthodox Church was closed down during Soviet times and used as a warehouse and gym. During Black January in 1990, it was severely damaged by Soviet missiles. In 2000, the church was fully restored with financial aid from the Azerbaijani entrepreneur, Aydin Gurbanov, a Muslim. The Church became a Cathedral a year later. Text written by Rachel Deghati. RepostBy @natgeo_az : "The border #Azerbaijan #Nardalan #Nardaran I had reached the remote village of Nardalan. I was looking for a place to rest for a few hours, or perhaps a few days, to replenish myself in an atmosphere Reminiscent of my childhood. The sun had just risen. The bustle of the day had not yet begun. I strolled along the deserted streets, immersed in daydreams. I encountered an old man, who looked proud but gentle, seeming both dignified and vulnerable. After exchanging a few words in Azeri, he asked me, with emotion in his voice, “You’re from the south?” When I answered yes, he broke into sobs. “I am from the south, too,” he said. “I was a year old when my parents decided to visit relatives here. But then the border was shut down, and we couldn’t leave. My childhood was marked by the grief my parents felt because they could never go back to their loved ones. They had left them for a few days that stretched into forever.” As I listened to him, buried memories resurfaced in my mind, scenes from my childhood in Tabriz. I thought I heard my mother’s melancholy song of Ayriliq, which evoked the sorrow when Azerbaijan was arbitrarily divided in two. My father gave me the historical explanation for the separation, which had torn families apart, stranding family members on both sides of the Aras River. This old man had grown up, and grown old, in that forced exile. Text written by Rachel Deghati.
