The last course of the river #Egypt, South of #Alexandria I was on assignment for National Geographic on Nile Delta. Isn't the Nile considered the cradle of civilization and agriculture? The Nile, abounding in organic plants, came from African lands to feed Egypt, to the beat of its floods. As years and centuries went by, irrigated and cultivated lands gave back to man the lavish fruit of his labor. Many species of fish used to live in the waters of the generous river. At that time, men, animals and nature lived in balance. Then came the day when man, proud of his technological knowledge and following the inevitable momentum of progress, wanted to tame nature and the Nile in order to better control its stream, its floods and its recedings. Temples, sleeping Pharaohs and their treasures were cut up and moved a few hundred feet away to prevent them from being forever immersed. A giant piece of concrete was erected to trap the waters of the river: it was named the Aswan Dam. That huge wall may provide electric power, however it blocks the natural fertilizers needed for cultures. As a result, the soil has grown poorer and fish have become scarcer. As man wanted to provide a technological answer to that natural disaster, the Nile was encircled by petrochemical plants producing fertilizers here and there. Nevertheless, those fertilizers poisoned the river as they fed the earth. On the banks of the Nile, in the delta, fish lay dead, and the hands of fishermen are affected by skin disease. Further away, the river, exhausted by its hindered course and polluted by factory wastes, flows into the sea. Text written by Rachel Deghati. The never-ending dept #Cambodia. #Thai #border, #Poipet There were about one hundred children coming from all over the country. They were orphans or children abandoned because of the high destitution they were living in. Every day, despite the risk of getting caught by the Thai frontier officers, they would enter Thailand in order to sift through the rubbish bins which were more abundant in Thailand than in Cambodia. Back in Cambodia, they would go to the scrap merchant – the one who rent to them pieces of cardboard at full price so that they would spend the night in relative security. The rubbishes would be weighed. And each time, the children would hope that this time, they would be able to discharge their debt and finally be freed. But it was never enough. At night, lonely and full of anxiety, the scrap merchant’s young slaves would fall asleep on the pieces of cardboard, increasing their never-ending debt. Text by Rachel Deghati. The dunes of the immense desert of #Taklamakan stretch as far as the eye can see. It is an ancient part of the Silk Road, with ancient cities now lost or fallen into decrepitude, encroached upon by the shifting sands, recalling fallen kingdoms. One can still make out the outline of broken walls of ancient habitations, and fields are bordered by a few pieces of wood propped up towards the sky. It has been several centuries since there were signs of life and the dead remain buried there. International Day of Families #Iraq, Kurdistan Regional Government, between #Duhok and# Zakho, Refugee camp of Cham mishko. Since 2013, I have been working on a book and exhibition project on the Kurdistan Regional Government in Iraq. I wanted to highlight its culture, its country and its people that, in the midst of troubled times, seek to bring peace to the Middle East. Here, at the refugee camp of Cham Mishko, entire families are assembled on the long road to rebuilding themselves. Many families have been torn apart by the war ravaging Iraqi Kurdistan, Syria and Iraq. Off to fight on the one hand or forced onto the road to exile on the other, parents and children leave their family homes with no hope of returning. Refugee children of the same family, belonging to the Qirani Hajj Mirza tribe. The Cham mishko refugee camp received many Yazidis who fled the town of Shingal (Sinjar in Arabic), which was seized by ISIS on August 3rd 2014, before being retaken on November 13th 2015 by Kurdish forces, supported by an international coalition. The Yazidis of Kurdish ethnic origin are a religious community who practice Yazidism, one of the oldest monotheistic religion in the world with similarities in somes ritual with Zoroastrianism, Hinduism, Judaism as well as Mazdaism. They live mainly in the province of Nineveh in the north of Iraqi Kurdistan. Since 2014, they have been persecuted by the Islamic State, who regard them as devil worshippers. #InternationalDayofFamilies #family #familyfirst #familyphotography #refugeecamp #refugee #KurdistanRenaissance #kurd #kurdistan #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan #رضادقتى عكاس @thephotosociety

Mother's Day #Colombia, Cauca Department, #Inza, Tierras Blancas farm Guardian of the sanctuary There is a wooden house perched on top of a hill. In the distance, small spots of bright colors animate the loggia along the façade. The sound of laughter is apparent, creating a light and pleasant atmosphere. The surrounding view is peaceful, the infrastructure remarkably well maintained, and the house is rather basic, but a sense of softness and tenderness is present during the encounter with these women of all ages. United in solidarity around the cultivation of coffee, they are all active members of the “Buscando Futuro” association. Sweetness, clarity, and determination are visible throughout the dozens of different faces of these women. Some of them are not married, while others have seen their brothers or fathers killed and taken away from them. All of the women are living in cohesion, attached to their plantation; their only means of survival. In a room of the house, the headquarters of the association, a young woman is cradling her child. A tender moment of sharing between mother and child, a moment of love snatched from the exhausting grind of coffee growing. #usa #motherday #motheranddaughter #love #tenderness #baby #mother #picoftheday #igers #photooftheday #photojournalism #reza #rezaphoto #rezadeghati #rezaphotography #rezaphotojournalist #webistan ##عكاس#رضادقتى @thephotosociety

#Azerbaijan, #Baku, Holy Myrrhbearers Cathedral In Azerbaijan, while working on a long term assignment on the Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities who live peacefully together. This story sheds light on the incredible assimilation of diverse religious groups all driven by the desire to share in a mutual respect that is not present in other countries. A woman from the Orthodox Christian community lights candles at the Easter Vigil. The Orthodox Church holds an Easter Vigil at sundown where a Paschal candle is illuminated by a sacred flame. The candle is passed around so that all the participants can light the candles they are holding. The growing light symbolizes the light of Christ coming into the world. This Russian Orthodox Church was closed down during Soviet times and used as a warehouse and gym. During Black January in 1990, it was severely damaged by Soviet missiles. In 2000, the church was fully restored with financial aid from the Azerbaijani entrepreneur, Aydin Gurbanov, a Muslim. The Church became a Cathedral a year later. Text written by Rachel Deghati. RepostBy @natgeo_az : "The border #Azerbaijan #Nardalan #Nardaran I had reached the remote village of Nardalan. I was looking for a place to rest for a few hours, or perhaps a few days, to replenish myself in an atmosphere Reminiscent of my childhood. The sun had just risen. The bustle of the day had not yet begun. I strolled along the deserted streets, immersed in daydreams. I encountered an old man, who looked proud but gentle, seeming both dignified and vulnerable. After exchanging a few words in Azeri, he asked me, with emotion in his voice, “You’re from the south?” When I answered yes, he broke into sobs. “I am from the south, too,” he said. “I was a year old when my parents decided to visit relatives here. But then the border was shut down, and we couldn’t leave. My childhood was marked by the grief my parents felt because they could never go back to their loved ones. They had left them for a few days that stretched into forever.” As I listened to him, buried memories resurfaced in my mind, scenes from my childhood in Tabriz. I thought I heard my mother’s melancholy song of Ayriliq, which evoked the sorrow when Azerbaijan was arbitrarily divided in two. My father gave me the historical explanation for the separation, which had torn families apart, stranding family members on both sides of the Aras River. #Azerbaijan, #Gakh (#Qakh) District, Kurmuk Church In Azerbaijan, while working on a long term assignment, I found a very specific and interesting tradition. This picture belongs to a series of photo reports on the Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities of Azerbaijan, who inhabit the same land. This unique exhibition sheds light on the incredible assimilation of diverse religious groups all driven by the desire to share in a mutual respect that is not present in other countries. A young woman’s face reflects the soft glow of candlelight as she prays and honors the legend of Saint George’s slaying of the dragon. Saint George, a 3rd century Saint from Palestine, is celebrated by Muslims and Christians alike. In Azerbaijan’s northern district bordering Georgia, the ancient Caucasian-Albanian Church accepts both Azerbaijani Muslims and Christian Georgians. These two very different religious communities come together as one to celebrate what they call the Kurmukoba festival. Most participants buy ten home-made beeswax candles and participate in a short pilgrimage up the steep hill to the church. Some of the candles are lit during the hike and are stuck to the side of the mountain. The remaining candles are lit inside the church; however, one may not enter the church until having circled around it three times, kissing its wall and praying at each of its four corners. At a Sunday “sobraniye” or service, the Molokan pastor leads the traditional prayer. Their prayer house has no icons or ornaments because they believe in worshiping God who cannot be seen. The Molokans, known as “milk (moloko) drinkers,” are Christian Russians who refused to adhere to the fasts and rituals of the Russian Orthodox Church. After being expelled from Russia, they have struggled to preserve their 400-year-old way of life in Azerbaijan in the face of emigration and the lack of social and economic support. The Ivanovka village is home to the last group of prosperous Molokans in the Caucuses due to their preservation of a Soviet Era collective farm, the Kolkhoz. #Azerbaijan, #Ismayilli Region, #Ivanovka Village In Azerbaijan, while working on a long term assignment, I found a very specific and interesting tradition.
