When two of Damdam’s children died of starvation as they were fleeing Boko Haram, she was too exhausted to bury their bodies. Three months later, Damdam gave birth to another child, Damtsi. Her baby was malnourished at birth. Though you may not have heard about it, Africa's Lake Chad basin region is in the midst of a massive humanitarian crisis. A campaign of violence waged by Boko Haram has displaced an estimated 3.7 million people across Cameroon, Chad, Niger and Nigeria, and more than 6.5 million people are severely food insecure, according to @worldfoodprogramme_official. Members of the #UnitedNations Security Council meet with women's groups from across #Nigeria. Representatives of the countries on the Council have been a four-country visit to shine a spotlight on the ongoing humanitarian challenges affecting around 11 million people in the Lake Chad Basin region. The trip to #Cameroon, #Chad, #Niger and Nigeria, wrapped up on Monday, was focused on the twin challenges of tackling the security threats posed by Boko Haram, and the growing humanitarian crisis in the region and underlying causes of fragility. “Our town was invaded and there were shootings, killings and burnings. My husband was slaughtered in my presence”, tells Maryam (27). Regram from @sam7tarling - Haji Kolo's broke. So broke that her husband was out in the community asking for alms when I took this picture today. Yet the 60 year old owns a slew of properties in Maidugri, the capital of Nigeria's conflict-wracked Borno State. Instead of profiting from them, she rents them at a pittance to families that have been displaced by Boko Haram. Such generosity seems not uncommon here. We've met a few land owners who have given over space to people. In fact, everyone I've met on this trip has been lovely. Which makes me wonder: If everyone in this part of the world is so nice, why Boko Haram? It's a question that also often crossed my mind when working in Syria. Perhaps the uncomfortable truth is that given the right circumstances there's a Boko Haram, an ISIS, a Syrian Regime in all of us. So many people here have said that unless there's efforts to correct the long-standing disenfranchisement of this part of Nigeria things here will only get much worse, Boko Haram or no Boko Haram. FACT: “The Boko Haram insurgency has displaced over 2.4 million people in the Lake Chad Basin. Although the Nigerian military has regained control in parts of the country’s north-east, civilians in Nigeria, Cameroon, Chad and Niger continue to be affected by grave violations of human rights, widespread sexual and gender-based violence, forced recruitment and suicide bombings… Approximately 17 million people in the Lake Chad Basin have been affected by the conflict, including more than 2.4 million displaced from their homes. The crisis has been exacerbated by conflict-induced hunger and malnutrition, which have risen to critical levels in all four countries.” // Fact & image source: UNHCR Nigeria Emergency. During #UNGA week, many crises on the agenda, like the #LakeChadBasin. #Aid agencies across the Lake Chad Basin are highly concerned by the increasing trend of forced recruitment and exploitation of children by #BokoHaram. Moreover, #children who escaped or were released from captivity are now facing suspicion, stigmatization or rejection across communities. Muna Dalti camp in Maiduguri, Nigeria, one of many camps now home to millions displaced due to both conflict and climate change in the Lake Chad Basin. Hi this is Jane Hahn @janehahn taking over @womenphotograph this week with stories from my based in West Africa and beyond. The following is part of my ongoing personal project documenting how the Boko Haram crisis is affecting the fragile environment of the Lake Chad Basin. Displaced boys originally from Yebi, Nigeria sit under the last remaining tree across from the largest refugee camp in Diffa, Niger. Over 300,000 people displaced by the Boko Haram crisis are taking refuge in southern Niger, straining the already vulnerable environment of the Lake Chad basin. In the last fifty years the size of Lake Chad has shrunk by nearly 90 percent due to climate change as well as human factors. In Diffa, across from the regions largest camp, refugees cut down trees to use for fire wood which can cost up to 50 percent of a family's monthly income. Most of the displaced are farmers and fishermen who are used to a more fertile environment and are unable to yield enough from Niger's harsh environment to provide for their families. Aid agencies are unable to provide the basics for most of the displaced due to a lack of funding from international donors further worsening the crisis. #womenphotograph #climatechange #niger #diffa #bokoharam #lakechadbasin #lakechad #desertification #deforestation #photojournalism #displaced

"I am always afraid that they [Boko Haram] will come at any time to harass us, capture us and burn our village," says Zara, 7. "When I close my eyes, my mind keeps working, recalling the murders and massacres. I can see how my friends were taken away. The images are there. They won't go away". We are working with children, such as Zara, in the Lake Chad Basin to overcome the images of atrocities that remain even after they have fled to safety. Our child-focused interventions emphasise creative work and games aiming to encourage children to open up. Simple measures such as these can go a long way in helping children recover and start a normal life. Today, Zara participates in psychosocial activities and learns the importance of education and upholding children's rights. "Playing and laughing have become a reality here, and I have made a lot of friends," she says. #LakeChadBasin #childfriendlyspaces

Displaced children play outside of a tent in Kindjandi, Niger. Over 20,000 internally displaced persons (IDPs) and refugees fleeing the violence of Boko Haram, have taken refuge in Kindjandi, a town with an original population of 3000. All of these people have been chased from their villages by #BokoHaram, the terrorist group. Many of the displaced came from along the Nigerian border, a fertile area near Lake Chad where they made a living as fishermen or pepper farmers for generations. Some brought their herds and flocks when they fled their villages. Now, cattle, goats, donkeys and chickens compete with people for food and water in a series of roadside villages that have turned into towns of want. @adamfergusonphoto took this picture of a young boy guarding a herd of livestock. This child — along with tens of thousands of other people like him — is stuck in the desert, clinging to the edges of a highway to survive.
