SHOULD YOU FLEX YOUR LOW BACK? . The answer to that question above is a very emphatic "it depends". Anytime we talk about a movement being good or bad, we have to apply context. Because no movement is inherently one or the other.🙅🏻‍♂️❌✅ . Lumbar flexion is a polarizing topic. It's been villianized for a long time as an injury mechanism. Now we see the pendulum swinging back the other way where people are saying that you should flex your low back. So I'm sure that can get confusing for you.😕 . Let's clear up some of that and give you some context. . In a low stress situation, aka picking up light objects, 👟tying your shoes, etc. then lumbar flexion is absolutely ok. And it's not so much that you should flex the low back as much as you should just adopt a variety of movement strategies. I call it MOVEMENT VARIABILITY. Lumbar flexion fits within that variability as does neutral spine, hip flexion, twisting, etc. . In a high stress situation, aka deadlifts, picking up heavy objects, doing a lot of reps at low intensities, or in an acute back injury, then we want to adopt more of a straight spine. I call this MOVEMENT OPTIMIZATION. There is a best way to lift heavy loads and we should strive for that to reduce injury risk as much as possible. If you have issues with this, strengthening the hips can really help as I show in the video. Stronger hips will take stress off of the spine under heavy loads. . The key thing for you to know is that your spine is inherently strong.💪🏻 It can handle a lot. And it is also built to move so don't be afraid to. That's why it's made of a bunch of little bones and not just an extra femur. So understand your situation and move appropriately. . #ChestDay 🙏Just like we did with the lunges on Friday, this exercise is meant to “prime” and warm up the larger shoulder muscles to prepare them for upper body movements. This simple pushup and rotation 🤸‍♂️will activate the pecs, traps, deltoids, rotator cuff, rhomboids, serratus, etc. The balancing aspect of rotating will help get the small 🔬stabilizers in the shoulder fired 🔥up and ready for throwing🤽‍♀️, pressing, pulling, and overhead🏋️‍♀️ motions. Do 5-20 repetitions (1 Repetition = 1 pushup, rotate left, 1 pushup, rotate right).😈 . . There are a bunch of ways to do a pushup.🔢 This pushup variation is a universal “mid grip” position that will prepare the shoulder for proper stability⚖️ and mechanics⚙️. A wider pushup will get you ready for some heavy power lifting.💪 A more narrow pushup will target different parts of the chest and arms. Side to side ↔️pushups test your range of motion and control. Clapping 👏pushups prepare you for quick, powerful movements. etc. etc. . . When rotating🔄, make sure that the bottom and top arm are directly over one another↕️. Make sure that the body is completely facing the wall➡️. A lot of times people will rotate the top arm too far and the body will still kind of be facing the ground. Imagine you have laser pointers 📍on your nipples… you want those lasers pointing directly at the wall, not the ground or ceiling.🤪 Hold this position for a couple of seconds⏱ and make sure the shoulders are pulled away from the ears 👂and the back is squeezed. Enough time has passed for me to finally be able to laugh at myself for literally only swimming 11 times in preparation for the Ironman, all of which was done the month prior. In this photo I was dizzy and my hands were numb so I couldn't get the ear plugs out of my damn ears. THANKFULLY the volunteers were absolutely awesome and pulled them out for me 😅😃😃😀. I also didn't realize that they would get me to lay down and then strip my wetsuit off for me. What a crazy day full of new experiences 😅. Thanks @finisherpix for the photos 👌👍
