Tuesday Cat Tales – “Poo-phoria”
There are some great mysteries in this world - those that sweep history, baffle scientists, intrigue people and remain unexplained for all of time. Perhaps the most perplexing mystery is why on earth does my cat go absolutely nuts after he does a poop. I’m not talking just a little strange. He gets wide- eyed, excited, and flighty. He runs from one end of the house to another, launches his almost-but-not-quite-7kg frame up two metre tall cat trees and stares at the corner of the ceiling as if it’s talking to him. His tail sways, he is hunched and ready to take off, and he makes a noise like a seagull as if to say “look Mum, I pooped. You can deal with that later”. This might sound totally normal for your cat, but for my cushiony lazy boy it’s a shocking contrast from the excessively lazy lump he typically is.
I have always been curious as to what causes this bizarre and nutty behaviour! For a long time, I thought that because he lost what seemed to be almost half his body weight in poop, perhaps he felt as light as a feather and had a new found speed. Or, maybe the smell was so intense that he needed to get as far away as he could, as quickly as he could (I’m sure many of you relate to this). This week, I read an article from Dr Chris Brown (my one true love) about the concept of “Poo-phoria”, and it explained that there is a studied, scientific reason behind this behaviour. “Poo-phoria” is likely due to the stimulation of the Vagus nerve, that runs from the brain to the colon in our feline fur babies. After pooping, the nerve sends a message to the brain giving a natural euphoric high that cats seem to react to by acting totally whacky. Almost like a celebration of poop. How cool is that? And what is even cooler is someone thought to call it “Poo-phoria”. Does your cat experience “poo-phoria” and goes totally bananas after doing their business? Let me know below!
